It’s been an up-and-down season for the Lakers, but it appears they’re peaking at the right time. They recently had their longest win streak since winning the title in 2020. What is this team’s ceiling in the playoffs?

NBA Take of the Week: Lake Show Is Back — How Far Can It Go?

Image via Troutfarm27 / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY 4.0), cropped

Lake Show is in full effect as we approach the playoffs. The Lakers sit 3rd in the West and were just on a 9-game win streak (their longest since the 2020 title run) before losing to Detroit. Since January 1st, they’re 28-15 and trending like a real threat — but how far can this actually go?

It starts with Luka Doncic. He’s averaging 37.2 PPG, 7.1 APG, and 8.2 RPG on 49/38 splits in March, and more importantly, he’s driving elite shot quality across the roster. Jaxson Hayes (top-3 eFG%), Ayton (top-10 TS%), and Luke Kennard (top-5 TS%) are all benefiting from Luka’s pick-and-roll and drive-and-kick creation — generating some of the cleanest looks in the league. Add in Austin Reaves’ 23.6 PPG and LeBron James still giving you an efficient 20+ PPG with 6 & 6 on 51% shooting, and this offense is built to score at a high level every night.

The question is what happens when that offense stalls. The loss to Detroit showed the blueprint — Luka goes inefficient, LeBron is quiet, and the defense doesn’t hold up. The Lakers rank just 8th in offensive rating and don’t have the depth or defensive consistency to survive off nights, especially in a playoff setting where the game slows down and defense tightens. They have enough shot creation to win a series — but without reliable defense and secondary scoring depth, this feels like a team with a second-round ceiling.

CBB Take of the Week: Duke Has a Closing Problem

There’s been some crazy games so far in the NCAA Tournament, but Duke vs. UConn is easily one of the best I’ve seen. And the way Duke lost made it feel way too familiar. They were up 19 in the first half, went into halftime up 15 (44–29), and still found a way to lose off a clutch three from Braylon Mullins. That ending says a lot about where this team is right now. UConn became the first team ever to come back and win after being down 15+ at halftime — and Duke was on the wrong side of it.

Because this isn’t new. Duke only had three losses this season, but every single one followed the same pattern — blown leads. Up 17 vs Texas Tech, up 13 vs North Carolina, and even last year in the Final Four, up 14 vs Houston. Different games, same result. At some point, it stops being random and starts being who you are.

The bigger issue is how they’re built. Duke lives in the one-and-done era — elite freshmen, new roster every year. That wins you headlines, but it doesn’t always win you March. When Duke was winning championships, it was with experienced guys like Christian Laettner, Shane Battier, Bobby Hurley, and Jon Scheyer — players who had been in the system and knew how to close games. Even the 2015 championship team had Quinn Cook as a senior presence.

And it’s not like this happens overnight. The best coaches didn’t win immediately — John Wooden took 18 years, Coach K took 16, Roy Williams took 17. Jon Scheyer is still early in his run, but he’s dealing with a system that resets every year. If Duke is going to win at that level again, it’s not just about landing the top recruiting class — it’s about having the experience to actually finish games.
