NBA Take of the Week: Does James Harden Make Cleveland a Legit Championship Threat?

Image via Wikimedia Commons

The Cavs went all-in at the deadline, flipping Darius Garland for James Harden. Garland and Harden overlap stylistically, so this move wasn’t about fit — it was about availability and experience. Cleveland is betting Harden’s half-court command raises their playoff ceiling after multiple postseason exits, including last year’s 64-win season that ended in a second-round loss.

Offensively, the impact has been immediate. Over the last 10 games, the Cavs rank #1 in offensive rating and top-3 in net rating. Harden remains one of the league’s best pick-and-roll operators (4th in assists at 8.2 APG), and since the trade Jarrett Allen is averaging 21.8 PPG and 10.5 RPG in a more spaced, structured system. When Harden is orchestrating, the offense looks championship-level.

The concern is on the other end. Cleveland ranks 18th in defensive rating over that same stretch, and it showed against OKC this past Sunday when the Thunder were able to build an early lead in transition and later coast from there. Several East contenders rank top-13 in fast-break scoring (Raptors, Pistons, 76ers, etc.), and if the Cavs can’t clean up their transition defense, that weakness will be hunted in a seven-game series. Harden raises Cleveland’s ceiling simply by being available. But unless the defense tightens before April, this could end in another early exit.

CBB Take of the Week: Who’s Currently the Best Freshman Point Guard?

College basketball hasn’t disappointed this season. The freshman guard class alone is loaded — Darryn Peterson, Darius Acuff, Kingston Flemings, Keaton Wagler, and Mikel Brown Jr. are all putting up serious numbers. It’s easy to see why NBA teams are positioning themselves for one of these guards. But if you had to pick one right now, who’s actually the best overall freshman point guard?

Let’s start with Darius Acuff. He’s the definition of a game-changer at the position. Acuff is averaging 22 PPG on 50% shooting and 42% from three, and he just dropped 49 points against Alabama. At 6’3”, he’s not part of the oversized guard wave, but he controls pace, creates at all three levels, and can take over late. He’s not just a scorer either — he organizes the offense and delivers when they need a basket. That blend of shot creation and control is rare for a freshman.

Kingston Flemings brings a different profile. At 6’4” with elite burst and mid-range touch, he’s drawn Derrick Rose comparisons — and the physical tools are real. He’s shooting 38% from three (on low volume) and impacts both ends. The question is projection. He’s playing on the strongest roster of this group alongside a veteran like Emmanuel Sharp. What does that look like when he’s the clear #1 option every night? The upside is undeniable, but role context matters.

Keaton Wagler might be the best shooter of the bunch. He’s averaging 18.2 PPG, 5.0 RPG, and 4.3 APG while shooting 42% from deep, including a 40-piece against Purdue where he went 9-of-11 from three. The concern is consistency. Against elite defenses like UConn, Tennessee, Michigan State, and UCLA, his efficiency has dipped. That doesn’t disqualify him — it highlights the adjustment curve against top-tier competition.

Then there’s Mikel Brown Jr. — explosive shot creator, capable of going for 45 on any night. But he’s been the least efficient of the group (18 PPG on 42.4% from the field and 35% from three) and plays in the weakest conference of the four. The scoring talent is obvious, but right now the others are producing more efficiently and consistently. He battled early injuries, but since returning he’s been on a heater, so expect his stock to rise again.

All of these guards are legit. But if I had to choose today, I’m taking Darius Acuff. When you evaluate modern point guards, two things matter most: scoring gravity and control of the game. Acuff checks both boxes at a high level. Flemings is right there with his two-way upside, but if I’m drafting a lead guard, I want the one who can dictate tempo and close games. Right now, that’s Acuff.
