Opening Tip-Off

Spurs Hot Streak Ended
The San Antonio Spurs were on an 11-game win streak that included wins over OKC and, more recently, the Detroit Pistons — the two first-place teams in the Western and Eastern Conferences. As we get closer to the playoffs, the Spurs are making a serious case as championship contenders.

Duke Looks Unstoppable
The Blue Devils are the hottest team in college basketball right now. They beat then-#1 Michigan, handed Notre Dame its worst home loss in program history (100–56), and then dominated #11 Virginia at home. Is this team better suited to win it all than last year’s group?

NBA Take of the Week: Detroit Still Doesn’t Have Enough Shooting

Pikraken / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY 4.0), cropped

I’m just as hype as everyone else about the turnaround Detroit is having. Cade Cunningham has been putting up MVP-caliber numbers, along with Jalen Duren, who was recently selected as a first-time All-Star. The Pistons currently hold the best record in the East and the entire NBA, but looking at the numbers and how this roster is constructed, I don’t see this team making it out of the East — possibly not even past the semis.

For starters, Cade Cunningham has been putting up near career-high numbers across the board, averaging 25.5 PPG, 9.8 APG, and 5.8 RPG. And it’s because of Cade that this team has the best record in the NBA. The Pistons currently lead the NBA in clutch wins and wins against teams above .500, largely due to Cunningham being top-5 in the league in clutch points (119). But the problem isn’t the clutch — it’s the offense as a whole.

Detroit currently ranks #28 in the league in three-pointers made and bottom-10 in three-point percentage. Although the Pistons have the fourth-highest scoring bench, the Celtics (#1) and the Knicks (#2) have better benches and shoot the three-ball substantially better. Friday night’s game against the Cavs showed that. When Detroit gets down to crunch time and shots aren’t falling, who else can they turn to besides Cunningham? The Pistons rank middle of the pack (#15) in effective field goal percentage, compared to teams like the Celtics, Knicks, and Cavs, who all rank in the top-10. That means the Pistons aren’t generating as many quality buckets as these other contenders — and in the NBA, offense ultimately determines the final score. If the Pistons can’t find consistent offense outside of Cade Cunningham, it could cost this team its first Finals berth since 2005.

CBB Take of the Week: Is This Year’s Duke Team Better Built to Win It All Than Last Year’s?

We hear it every year — like the Cowboys, Duke is apparently winning it all. Year after year, they land the top prospects in the country, and lately they’ve dominated recruiting, bringing in their third #1-ranked class in four years under head coach John Scheyer. But the way this current recruiting class was built around this year’s roster gives them a better advantage to win it all.

Let’s start with Cam Boozer. There’s a lot of debate about who’s the better college player, and although Boozer’s season isn’t over yet, he’s proven his game fits a mold better suited for college basketball. For starters, Boozer is 6’9”, 250. Cooper Flagg entered Duke at 6’9”, 205 — and you can clearly see the difference. Boozer is able to bully defenders and score at will. Another important factor: Boozer is a much better shooter than Flagg was at Duke, currently averaging 22.5 PPG on 57.7% from the field and 40.2% from three. Boozer gives Duke an automatic scoring option, which this team lacked tremendously last year. And it showed in multiple late, tight-game situations when the Blue Devils couldn’t convert a bucket, which ultimately cost them the Final Four.

Now let’s zoom out and compare the rosters. Obviously, Duke was loaded with talent last year, sending the entire starting five to the NBA. What’s interesting is this year’s team is actually better all-around offensively and defensively, metrics-wise, compared to last year. Duke currently has the #6 offensive rating nationally, compared to last year’s team, which ended the season with the #1 offense. But a key variance is that last year’s Duke team ranked #310 in the country in 2-point FG% (45.3), compared to this year’s team at #219 (47.9%). Last year’s team was a much better three-point shooting team, hitting 37.7% compared to the current team’s ~35%. But when shots aren’t falling, this team has a more balanced offense to rely on.

More importantly, this current Duke roster holds the #1 defense in the country and doesn’t really have any weak defenders you can attack. Caleb Foster and Dame Sarr have formed an elite defensive backcourt for the Blue Devils, followed by an elite frontcourt of Patrick Ngongba II, Cameron Boozer, and Maliq Brown, who is a defensive specialist. One major problem last year’s team had was that while Khaman Maluach helped with rim protection, teams were able to pull him out to the perimeter and attack him 1-on-1, or target players like Kon Knueppel.

In March, anything can happen. But two problems Duke had last year were the inability to find an answer down the stretch when they needed one most, and a defense that could be exploited when Maluach was on the floor. This year, having Ngongba at the five gives Duke solid rim protection and more defensive versatility. And most importantly, down the stretch, they’ve proven they’re ready to answer the call — whether it’s Boozer getting downhill or Isaiah Evans knocking down a clutch three like we saw earlier this season against Florida. This team is better constructed to win it all, and it’ll be interesting to see how they fare come tournament time.
