NBA Take of the Week: Dylan Harper Will Be a Top-5 PG

Image via Reuters (Scott Wachter–Imagn Images), cropped & edited by Full Timeout
Dylan Harper is blossoming into a star — and it’s not really a shocker. Coming out of high school, his game was pro-ready, and now it’s translating at the next level. Even in the loss vs Denver, you saw flashes — and to me, he’s a future top-5 PG in the league.
What stands out is the efficiency. Harper is on pace to become the youngest guard since Magic Johnson to average 10+ PPG on 50%+ shooting, and he’s doing it in a limited role off the bench. He’s already one of the best guards in the league at getting downhill — tight handle, quick first step, and extremely crafty in the paint. Although he’s currently shooting 33.3% from three, overtime that will improve and he’ll be a complete three-level scorer.
And then you look at the context. Harper finished with 12 points on 5-7 shooting and 2-3 from three in 20 minutes vs Denver, while Fox struggled (14 points, 7-19, 0-6 from three in 40 minutes). Yes, the late turnovers matter — that’s why Fox closed — but zoom out. A rookie is already producing more efficiently than an All-Star in a playoff-level game. That’s not normal. Give it time — Harper isn’t just going to be a star, he’s going to be one of the best point guards in the NBA.

CBB Take of the Week: National Champion Prediction
Who would’ve guessed the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship game would be a blue-blood battle between the UConn Huskies and the Michigan Wolverines? Michigan isn’t much of a surprise when you see how they’ve been dominating all year. But UConn wasn’t high on the radar to win the championship — however, with how they’ve performed lately, it’s not a surprise to see Dan Hurley and his squad competing for yet another title.
Now that we know the matchup, let’s determine who comes out on top. Michigan has been the most dominant team all year, currently holding the #1 net rating per KenPom. Not to mention, they have the #2 strength of schedule, so they’ve been tested all season. Michigan has elite size, possessing one of the biggest frontcourts in the country, and they have a top-5 offense. The Huskies are no slouch either.
UConn holds a top-10 defense nationally and has played elite teams all season long like BYU, Arizona, Illinois (2x), Kansas, and Florida. Not to mention, they’re led by the best coach in college basketball in Dan Hurley. Michigan loves to play fast (top-25 adjusted tempo), which has led to dominant outcomes for them in the tournament. But UConn will look to slow this one down, and that’s how they edge opponents.
It’s hard to lean one way, as both teams have strong advantages on their side — including the fact that UConn is 6-0 in national title games. But I’m going to lean Michigan simply because they’ve looked like the most complete team all year and just have too much size down low for UConn to handle. One thing’s for sure, though — we’re in for a good one tonight.
