Opening Tip-Off

Bing Bong
The Knicks blew out Denver this past Friday 142-103 in a game that was pretty much over by halftime. What stood out most was the defense holding the Nuggets to 103 points on their home floor. If New York can consistently defend like this, you’ll be hearing a lot more bing bongs.

Wisconsin Is Dangerous
The Badgers upset #15 Purdue at Mackey Arena 97–93 this past Saturday. Wisconsin now owns one of the strongest resumes in the country and could be a dangerous matchup for anyone in March.

NBA Take of the Week: Have the Knicks Finally Figured It Out?

Erik Drost / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY 2.0), cropped

Obviously the Knicks’ offense has never been the issue. New York currently ranks #3 in offensive rating (118.4) led by Jalen Brunson’s 26 PPG and elite clutch scoring. Brunson continues to prove he’s one of the most reliable closers in basketball, while Karl-Anthony Towns gives New York one of the most versatile scoring bigs in the league. Now add OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges to that mix, and you see why the Knicks have a top-3 starting five in the NBA.

And the numbers back it up. New York ranks top-10 in three-point attempts but top-5 in 3PM while also being top-5 in three-point percentage, meaning they’re generating efficient looks rather than simply launching volume. That balance showed up in their statement win against Denver, where the Knicks dropped 142 points and held the league’s best offense to just 103 points on their home floor.

But the real factor is the defense. Over the last 10 games, the Knicks have posted a #1 top-5 defensive rating in the NBA (107.4) and the #2 net rating (+13.7). That’s a major shift for a team that finished 13th in defensive rating last season, which ultimately cost them in the playoffs when they couldn’t generate enough stops against Indiana.

New York still leans heavily on its starting five, with the bench ranking near the bottom of the league in scoring. But the front office added some solid pieces that help stabilize those non-starter minutes. Rookie Tyler Kolek has shown flashes as a secondary playmaker, while veterans like Jose Alvarado and Jordan Clarkson bring defense, experience, and scoring punch off the bench.

So the offense and depth are obviously there. It’s what has kept the Knicks sitting in the contender seat for a while. But the question is can they sustain this type of balance during the playoffs? If they can fully unlock their defensive side like we’ve seen recently, there’s no ceiling for this team.

CBB Take of the Week: Wisconsin Will Bust Your Bracket

Wisconsin has to be one of the most interesting teams in college basketball this season. They’re currently 22–9 and sit at #5 in Big Ten standings, but their record doesn’t reflect just how dangerous this team is or what they’re capable of when it matters most. And it starts with their backcourt.

They’re led by one of the best backcourts in the nation with Nick Boyd and John Blackwell. Boyd averages 20.1 PPG on 48% from the field and 35% from three. Blackwell averages 18.3 PPG and shoots 38% from three. Not only do they get buckets, but in big games one of them, if not both, will always show up. Not to mention the supporting cast is solid with guys like Nolan Winter (13.3 PPG, 56.9 FG%), Austin Rapp (9.6 PPG, 35.9 3P%), Braeden Carrington (8.6 PPG, 42.7 3P%), etc.

The Badgers have elite wins against #3 Michigan, #11 Illinois, #8 Michigan State, #15 Purdue, and more. Their offense ranks #16 nationally, and they have a #24 net rating per KenPom. Wisconsin also ranks top-4 in offensive turnover percentage (12.9%), meaning they rarely turn the ball over, so this team is not going to beat themselves come tournament time.

I always say basketball is about buckets, and the Badgers get a lot of them. Not to mention they have a #55 defensive rating, which looks average among tournament teams, but defense is a metric that can drastically improve with effort. This team thrives in big games, and there is no better time to put in effort than March Madness.
